Moving on

Writer's picture: Mathilde BarbierMathilde Barbier

It has been a year since we moved to East Sussex. I remember the painful process of packing only too well.

"If only someone could just transfer everything, ‘exactly as it is‘ to my new home. Pack it all up and magically have it all unpacked all tidy and ready for me to move into. I wouldn’t have to think about a thing. On the other hand, moving to a new place is an opportunity to start afresh, to declutter, reorganize, reconsider, perhaps even reduce."

I am sure you have moved at least once in your life and will be able to relate.

Now, just imagine changing mobile phone. You have just got your shiny ‘new device’ (brand new or refurbished). All your life is on the old one. What are going to you take with you?

It will be a very different experience depending on the system you use. You might just connect the 2 phones together and a few clicks later you are holding in your hand an exact mirror copy of your ‘old’ one. If you change device or operating system, then it is another story, a lot must be transferred manually in this unfamiliar new environment.

Here are a few things I invite to consider when you change your phone:

  • Need vs Want: do you really need a new phone or is it just that you want one; and if so, why?

  • Must haves: what are the essentials you want to keep?

  • Nice to have: what apps matter to you most? Do they make you feel good?

  • Declutter: do you use all the programs? if you haven’t opened them for a few weeks, will you ever? what are you keeping them for?

  • Pack / unpack: as you start using you new phone, you can sort the apps into ‘folders’. For example, you might want to group them into themes: finance, health, games, travel, communication, etc. As you place them in the folders one by one, it will be easier to decide what you are going to keep.

Whether you are changing your phone or not, you can start decluttering it today and the best way to find out what you really need is to get rid of what you don’t!
